What is Somatic IFS?

Somatic Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a holistic therapeutic approach that integrates the principles of IFS with the wisdom of the body. While traditional IFS focuses on understanding and harmonizing our internal parts to foster Self energy, somatic IFS brings the body into the conversation. This approach emphasizes the connection between physical sensations, emotions, and our internal parts, offering a deeper, embodied experience of healing. By tuning into your body, you can access profound insights and pathways for releasing stuck emotions, unburdening parts, and cultivating a sense of peace and connection within.

What is Embodied Self Energy?

Embodied Self energy is your innate state of calm, clarity, curiosity, and compassion, accessible when you feel safe and connected within. It’s the birthright of every individual and serves as the foundation for healing and wholeness. Through somatic IFS, we tap into this profound resource, allowing you to navigate life with greater ease and authenticity.

Why Choose Somatic IFS?

Our bodies hold the stories of our lives. Trauma, stress, and emotional burdens often manifest physically, creating tension, discomfort, or even chronic pain. Somatic IFS helps bridge the gap between mind and body, offering benefits such as:

  • Deeper Awareness: Gain insight into how your body responds to different parts and experiences.
  • Emotional Release: Uncover and release stored emotions that may be contributing to physical or mental distress.
  • Increased Connection: Develop a more compassionate relationship with your body and its signals.
  • Lasting Change: Address both emotional and somatic layers of healing, promoting holistic transformation.

My Training in Somatic IFS

  • Week-Long Experiential Retreat: Led by Susan McConnell, an early IFS lead trainer and key contributor to the model, this immersive retreat provided tools for integrating body awareness into therapy, blending somatic practices with IFS.
  • 3-Month Advanced Training Program: Also led by Susan McConnell, this program focused on applying somatic techniques within IFS, including identifying somatic cues, facilitating embodied unburdening, and helping clients reconnect with their bodies.

My Approach to Somatic IFS

I integrate this modality in intuitive, non-restrictive ways that go beyond rigid protocols. This includes incorporating the five foundational practices of Somatic IFS:

  • Somatic Awareness: Developing a deep connection to physical sensations and understanding how they reflect your internal world.
  • Conscious Breath: Using intentional breathing to ground yourself, regulate emotions, and foster a sense of presence.
  • Radical Resonance: Cultivating attunement between Self energy and your parts, as well as with others, to enhance connection and healing.
  • Mindful Movement: Engaging the body in gentle, intentional movement to release tension and access deeper layers of experience.
  • Attuned Touch: Exploring safe, mindful contact—whether physical or imagined—to support the unburdening of parts and deepen connection to Self energy.
